In our last Community Council meeting on the 15^th of March, the Surfers Against Sewage ‘Plastic Free Communities’ scheme was raised and supported by all members of the Council. It was also fully supported in the Full Council meeting on the 22^nd of February 2018 to support plastic reduction initiatives in Ceredigion.

The scheme sets out five guidelines/objectives in order to achieve the ‘Plastic Free’ status, including setting up a Steering Group, working with local businesses and organisations to replace single use plastic with sustainable alternatives, and carrying out litter picks.

A few interesting facts:

1. At least 8 million pieces of plastic enter the oceans every day
2. Two-thirds of plastic gets into the sea from land based sources (incl. rivers and drains)
3. A plastic bottle can last for 450 years in the marine environment

There is of course so much more that needs to be done by retailers and the Government, to encourage, enforce reduced usage and increased recycling, but we as individuals and a community can do our bit, and with others, show how it can be done.

If you as an individual, business or organisation would like to get involved please get in touch. You can get involved by joining the Steering Group, joining organised litter picks, as an organisation or business, joining the movement and switching 3 single-use plastics for plastic free alternatives or by just passing on the message and doing your bit at home.
